Stock Photo Description: Gerrit Smith was a philanthropist, social reformer, and presidential candidate who was an ardent abolitionist; his home (now destroyed) at this site in Peterboro NY was a way station on the Underground Railroad. The brick building is the former Land Office on his estate, now a National Historic Landmark and museum in the Peterboro town square. Smith was a financial supporter of John Brown and was implicated in the raid on Harper's Ferry.
