Man and woman paddling a kayak away from shore at Napali Beach, Fanning Island, Republic of Kiribati. Fanning Island/Tabuaeran Atoll Discovered by Captain Edmund Fanning June 11 1798. The oval coral atoll consisting of three separate islands lie 228 miles north of the equator. Total land area is 26 square miles and does not rise more the 10 feet above sea level. Britain annexed Fanning Island in 1858 to build a cable relay station. In 1979 the island became part of the Republic of Kiribati. The local population is primarily Gilbertese who were brought to the islands in 1867 to work on a coconut plantation
