The original portion of the Georgian-style plantation house was built in the 1740s and the wings added in the 1760s. President George Washington visited the house on his 1791 Southern Tour, when the plantation owner asked whether the giant oak tree in front of the house, shown towering over the house in this stock photo, should be cut down to improve the view. Washington replied that he liked the tree and it was saved, a legend commemorated on a plaque beneath the tree, known as the Washington Oak.
