Poster Art-Print Description:
Stock photo showing the Wright Brothers National Memorial and Visitor Center at Kitty Hawk, NC, which commemorates one of America's historic moments: the first successful powered flight in a heavier-than-air machine, on December 17, 1903. In a trip that lasted only 12 seconds, Orville Wright became the first man to fly in a powered aircraft. Kill Devil Hill, a 90-foot-tall sand dune at Kitty Hawk, supports an obelisk monument to Orville and Wilbur Wright. The cornerstone of the monument was laid in 1928, witnessed by a group of dignitaries including Orville Wright and Amelia Earhart; the monument was finished and dedicated in 1932. It has the following inscription, along with the brothers' names in large text on one side: In commemoration of the conquest of the air by the brothers Wilbur and Orville Wright, Conceived by genius, Achieved by dauntless resolution and unconquerable faith. This photo shows a lone visitor sitting near the monument on a clear fall day, Autumn 2007.
