The square area consists of 32 parterres outlined in clipped dwarf yaupon that are planted with seasonal flowers. The central focal point is the antique Italian fountain (at left in photo) and pool with a carved balustrade. Statues representing Apollo, Diana (at right in photo), Venus and Jupiter center each of the four quadrants of parterres. The Elizabethan Gardens is a 10.5 acre recreation of a floral and herb garden from the time of the settling of the Roanoke Colony under Elizabeth I of England, which later became the Lost Colony, located near this site.
