Hulihee Palace was built by John Adams Kuakini using foreign seamen and local materials such as lave rock, coral lime mortar, ohia and koa timbers. Completed in 1838 Hulihee became the principal residence of Governor Kuakini. During the reign of King Kalakaua the Palace was extensively remodeled. In 1925 the Daughters of Hawaii began to operate Hulihee Palace as a museum.
