Stock Photo Description: Stock photo of a detail of the statue at Kitty Hawk commemorating the hundredth anniversary of the Wright Brothers flight, by sculptor Stephen H. Smith. The bronze and stainless steel sculpture was dedicated in 2003 on the centennial of the December 17, 1903, flight and is located near the site of the first successful heavier-than-air flight. The sculpture depicts the 1903 Wright Flyer with Orville Wright on board, as it is about to leave the ground, Wilbur Wright running alongside. The positions of the figures were based on the famous photo taken by local resident John Daniels of the Kill Devil Hills Life Saving Station using Orville's tripod-mounted camera. The Wright Brothers National Memorial obelisk on Kill Devil Hill is in the background.
