Stock Photo Description: Stock picture of the Wright Brothers National Memorial and Visitor Center at Kitty Hawk, NC. The monument commemorates one of America's historic moments: the first successful powered flight in a heavier-than-air machine, on December 17, 1903. In a trip that lasted only 12 seconds, Orville Wright became the first man to fly in a powered aircraft. Kill Devil Hill, a 90-foot sand dune at Kitty Hawk, supports this obelisk monument to Orville and Wilbur Wright. The cornerstone of the monument was laid in 1928, witnessed by a group of dignitaries including Orville Wright and Amelia Earhart; the monument was finished and dedicated in 1932. It has the following inscription, along with the brothers' names in large text on one side: In commemoration of the conquest of the air by the brothers Wilbur and Orville Wright, Conceived by genius, Achieved by dauntless resolution and unconquerable faith. This photo shows visitors walking around the monument on a cloudy fall day, Autumn 2007.
