Stock Photo Description: This stock photo shows part of the Sunken Gardens on Roanoke Island. The square area consists of 32 parterres outlined in clipped dwarf yaupon that are planted with seasonal flowers. The central focal point is the antique Italian fountain (at right in photo) and pool with a carved balustrade. Statues representing Apollo, Diana, Venus and Jupiter center each of the four quadrants of parterres. The Elizabethan Gardens is a 10.5 acre recreation of a floral and herb garden from the time of the settling of the Roanoke Colony under Elizabeth I of England, which later became the Lost Colony, located near this site. It is part of the Fort Raleigh National Historic Site on Roanoke Island near Manteo, North Carolina.
