In the year 1866 a bloody battle against the Turkish occupiers and a human tragedy took place at the Arkadi monastery. Hundreds of people died when in a hopeless situation the Cretan defenders blew themselves up with dynamite. The ossuary preserves the bones of fighters of the 1866 battle.
