Built about the year 360 (AD) the castle was a Roman trading centre and a military base in the Middle-Rhine Valley. In the year 2002 the UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) designated the Middle-Rhine Valley between Bingen and Koblenz as a world heritage region.
