Preparations for the Jewish Yom Kippur Day of Atonement
Stock Photo Description: 1-October-2006: On the eve of the Holy Jewish Day of Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, religious Jews bless themselves while spinning live poultry in the air above their heads and then mercilessly slaughtering them in sacrifice. Yom Kippur is commemorated with a 25-hour fast and intensive prayer. It is the most holy day of the Jewish year. Eating, drinking, washing, cosmetics, wearing leather shoes, and conjugal relations are prohibited. Fasting, total abstention from all food and drink, usually begins one half hour before sundown and ends after nightfall the following day. There is no commerce of any kind in the Jewish areas.
