Stock Photo Description: Enhanced false-color image shows viscous fingering of two immiscible liquids. The invading liquid (more dense, shown colored) enters a reservoir filled with a different, ambient liquid (less dense, shown black). As the invading liquid migrates downward under the influence of gravity, each individual liquid glob becomes unstable and bifurcates into two narrower globs ("fingers"). Repeated bifurcation results in a transverse spreading of the invading liquid, which manifests as a quasi-symmetric, inverted "V" pattern.
