Stock Photo Description: Opened in 1999, the Otira Viaduct replaced a notoriously steep, rock-slide-prone, zig-zag stetch of State Highway 71, the main route between Christchurch and Greymouth, New Zealand. It is not a particularly long stretch of road but is a feat of engineering because it is constructed in an earthquake-prone alpine area on a constantly moving substrate. At other points nearby, chutes have been constructed to deflect waterfalls and falling rock over the road.
