Stock Photo Description: The monastery of Saint Nicholas of the Cats was founded in 327 A.D., abandoned in the 16th century and re inhabited by nuns in 1980. It's probably the first monastery in Cyprus and is located east of Akrotiri village on cape Gata. The area around the monastery was full of snakes and according to legend, St.Helena who visited the monastery on her way to The Holy Land, asked her son (Saint Constantine), to send her a shipful of cats to clear the area. He did and from there on tradition has it that there were always around 100 cats living in the monastery which were fed by the monks or nuns.
